Checklist

What a GP practice website needs

Nobody visits a GP website for fun. They want to book, order a prescription or find out who to call tonight. If the site answers that fast, your phone line gets quieter. Here's a checklist you can hold your own site against.

The checklist

1. Appointments

  • Phone times, and which times are for what (appointments, test results, questions).
  • A link to your patient app or online booking, if you have one.
  • Home visits: who qualifies and how to ask for one.

2. Repeat prescriptions

  • Every way to order: app, prescription line, pharmacy.
  • How many working days it takes before the medication is ready.

3. Urgent care

  • The urgent number during the day, on every page, tappable on a phone.
  • Out-of-hours care for evenings, nights and weekends. In the Netherlands that's the huisartsenpost.
  • 112 for life-threatening situations, shown clearly and not buried in a paragraph.

4. New patients

  • Whether you're taking new patients right now.
  • Which postcodes or area you serve.
  • How to register, and what to bring or send.

5. Practical details

  • Opening hours, holidays and closures.
  • Address, parking, public transport and wheelchair access.
  • The team, without stock photos of doctors who don't work there.
  • A short, honest note on costs. In the Netherlands GP care is covered by basic insurance and doesn't count towards the deductible, but some things you refer patients for do.

6. Privacy and speed

  • A contact form that doesn't ask for medical details.
  • No trackers you don't need, so no cookie banner in the way.
  • Fast on a phone. Check it on a slow connection, not on the practice wifi.

Common mistakes

  • The urgent number only appears on the contact page.
  • Opening hours that are two holidays out of date.
  • Important info locked in a PDF that's hard to read on a phone.
  • Only one language in an area where half the patients read English.

What should be on a GP practice website?

How to make an appointment, how to order repeat prescriptions, the urgent number during the day, out-of-hours care, how to register as a new patient, opening hours and how to get there.

Should a GP website be in English as well?

In the Netherlands, often yes. Many patients are expats or students. A second language costs a little more to build but saves explaining things on the phone.

How much does a GP practice website cost?

With me, $80 for one page, $125 for 3 pages in two languages and $165 for up to 5 pages. Hosting is $25 or $49 a month.

Can patients book appointments on the site?

The site can link to your existing patient app or booking page. A full embed depends on the system you use.
